The Simpsons: Road Rage

Developer: Altron
Publisher: THQ
Platform: Game Boy Advance
Released in US: June 30, 2003
Released in EU: June 27, 2003

This game has regional differences.

Christmas Rushed: The game was rushed for a November deadline. As a result, the developers couldn't fix a game-breaking bug that made the map disappear on the PS2 version. They instead opted to split the map into several levels. This rushed development also led to the game lacking sub-objectives in. Fridge Logic: A couple of dialogue exchanges between driver and passenger just don't mix well. For example, if you're playing as Kwik-E-Mart owner Apu, you might pick up one of the local bullies, who'll ask to be taken to the Kwik-E-Mart to vandalize it, to which Apu will happily oblige. YMMV / The Simpsons: Road Rage. Game-Breaker: Professor Frink's hovercar has among the best stats, being among the best in both speed and turning ability. And you can unlock him at the beginning of the game, too! The Nuclear Power Plant has very close together landmarks, which makes it easy to amass a large amount of money.

It's Crazy Taxi! ... starring The Simpsons! ... on Game Boy Advance!

A decent game on home consoles becomes very hard to play on the GBA, as everything is flat and it's hard to tell where the level boundaries are.

Regional Differences

While the American version was released after the European one, the latter has a bit more polish.

  • Christmas Rushed: The game was rushed for a November deadline. As a result, the developers couldn't fix a game-breaking bug that made the map disappear on the PS2 version. They instead opted to split the map into several levels. This rushed development also led to the game lacking sub-objectives in the main game (rather than just a mission mode) and meant a few characters had to be cut.
  • Executive Meddling: The E3 build has a brighter and more cartoony look to it than the final build. This was a change decided by the series creator. He didn't want the game to be a carbon copy of the show and instead wanting something more 'video game' looking.

  • Follow the Leader: This game is pretty much a Crazy Taxi clone, so much that, well... Sega sued Fox over it.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The game features a number of blocked entrances to other levels. This is because all six levels were one single map at an earlier point in development. This was changed because the PS2 port couldn't handle the full map. At first there was severe lag, but after that was fixed there was a bug where the map would just stop loading. Due to the game having a deadline soon, the map was split at the last minute.
    • At one point, Principal Skinner, Hans Moleman, and Jasper Beardly were going to be playable characters, but were all cut.
    • In pre-development, it was briefly discussed whether the game should be a kart racer or not (hence the placeholder image with the logo The Simpsons Racing). This was quickly done away with because of the huge amount of kart games already on the market.

    • The E3 build has brighter colors and lighting than the finalized game.
    • It was briefly considered that the game be ported to the PSP, but this never went far into development.
